Imagology workshop: Distribution of culture through translation – The Latvian case
Researchers of various Universities have gathered in the premises of NISE, in Antwerp, to discuss about “Imagology and the distribution of culture through translation”.
Professor Luc van Doorslaer (University of Tartu) and Prof. Hanno Brand (NISE) have organised this workshop in order to steer the debate and shed some light on how translation participates in the construction of the identity of nations, and helps improve their image and perception by foreign cultures. The workshop mainly focused on the specific case of the translation of Latvian literature.
Prof. Luc van Doorslaer wraps up the result of the workshop with the following words:
Experts in the field participating in the event have extensively discussed about the political factors and social actors that eventually determine which texts are translated, into which languages, and the national image reflected through these translations.
