Projects by NISE
Over the last few months, three applications have been submitted within European programmes and the execution of one project is being prepared.
Together with twelve research institutes or universities from nine countries, a project called Alterity and Nation-Building was submitted within the COST framework by NISE in close cooperation with the department of History of University Antwerp. The project wants to compare research results regarding the effects of alterity discourses on nation-building and institutionalisation of national movements, acting as a catalyst for nationalist and regionalist conflict. Although not being selected, other ways to still proceed with the project will be examined over the next few months.
The second recent project application, within the European Culture Programme 2007-2013, was coordinated by ICARUS, the international network of archival institutes. Twenty-one archival institutes predominantly from Central and Southeastern Europe want to create a European Archival Network on World War I (ENWWI) in order to preserve on-line and research comparatively Europe’s archival heritage on WWI. It thus wants to offer new insights to a wider public enabling to overcome old and outdated national(ist) perspectives. NISE, as an associated partner to the project, is responsible for its historiographical and theoretical context.
The last application was made within the Innovative Doctoral Programme of the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks for Early Stage Researchers (ESR’s) of civic nationalism. The project, called “Transforms Europe”, is coordinated by Swansea University with National Library of Wales and NISE/ADVN as Associate Partners. In co-operation with the ADVN – archives, documentation and research centre, NISE will organise an archival and heuristic training course for the students participating in the ESR program.
A follow-up project on the Guide to the Archives (GTA) project, also funded by the Centre Maurits Coppieters (CMC), has been prepared by NISE to be carried out in 2013. This Ambulant Archival Services (AAS) project will assist political party archives with their most urgent needs, setting ways, providing models and procedures and hopefully engendering archival awareness in the process.
